How does Zovirax Ointment work? What will it do for me?

Acyclovir topical is used for the management of initial episodes of genital herpes infections. It is an antiviral medication that helps to reduce the pain and severity of herpes lesions or sores.

Your doctor may have suggested this medication for conditions other than those listed in these drug information articles. As well, some forms of this medication may not be used for all of the conditions discussed here. If you have not discussed this with your doctor or are not sure why you are using this medication, speak to your doctor. Do not stop using this medication without consulting your doctor.

Do not give this medication to anyone else, even if they have the same symptoms as you do. It can be harmful for people to use this medication if their doctor has not prescribed it.

How should I use Zovirax Ointment?

Apply the medication liberally to the affected area four to six times daily for up to 10 days as directed by your doctor. A sufficient quantity of ointment should be applied to adequately cover all lesions. When applying, wear a finger cot or rubber glove to decrease the chances of spreading the infection to other sites or other people. You should start using this medication as soon as possible following the onset of signs and symptoms.

Do not use this medication in the eye or on mucous membrane such as inside surfaces of the mouth. This medication is for use on external skin surfaces. Do not ingest this medication.

Many things can affect the dose of a medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor.

Do not use more of this medication or use it more often or for a longer period than your doctor has recommended. If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as possible and continue on with your regular schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on with your regular schedule.

Store this medication away from heat, light, moisture, and out of reach of children.

Do not dispose of medications in wastewater (e.g. down the sink or in the toilet) or in household garbage. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medications that are no longer needed or have expired.

What form(s) does Zovirax Ointment come in?

Each gram contains acyclovir 50 mg in a polyethylene glycol base.

Some medications may have other generic brands available. Always ask your doctor or pharmacist about the safety of switching between brands of the same medication.

Who should NOT take Zovirax Ointment?

Acyclovir topical should not be used by anyone who has or develops allergy or chemical intolerance to any of the components of the formulation (e.g., propylene glycol).
